BRAVE LIKE BRIAN
On July 3rd, Brian began showing signs of neurological problems and was taken to the emergency room, where imaging showed a mass in his brain. He was admitted to Neuro ICU and surgery was carried out the next day. Due to the location of the tumor, it was deemed inoperable. The surgeon, however, was able to create a pathway between the ventricles the tumor had blocked, placed a drain to relieve built up fluid and pressure, and retrieve a biopsy that was then sent to Mayo Clinic.
Following surgery, Brian continued to be closely monitored in the ICU. He had another surgery on July 8th to replace the drain with a shunt.
On July 11th, Brian met with a radiologist and oncologist to discuss next steps for treatment. They confirmed that the tumor is a germinoma, which although a rare type of tumor, responds well to radiation.
Brian hopes to be discharged from the hospital and return home soon to be with his babies – his cats Tilley and Smudge. His radiation treatments will begin immediately following full recovery from surgery. Brian remains positive and in good spirits, as he is hopeful his radiation treatments will be successful and things can return to normal for him.
